This study investigated changes in smoking behavior across pregnancies in a sample of 10,890 primiparous women participating in the prospective population-based Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study (MoBa). The study aimed to identify risk factors that may inhibit smoking cessation and promote smoking during a woman’s second pregnancy. The findings offer new and additional insight into modifiable risk factors that may help facilitate more targeted smoking cessation interventions for women at the highest risk.

Brief health education intervention by nurses in a busy clinical setting produced short-term effects in several key areas: raising awareness about exposure to secondhand smoke, reducing cigarette consumption, initiating quit attempts, and ultimately reducing sick children’s exposure to secondhand smoke. However, these short-term effects were not sustained at the 12-month follow-up, resulting in the need for more intensive interventions. Nurses can play key roles in providing individual counselling and advocacy of smoke-free homes in Hong Kong.
