Smoking During Consecutive Pregnancies Among Primiparous Women in the Population-Based Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study

This study investigated changes in smoking behavior across pregnancies in a sample of 10,890 primiparous women participating in the prospective population-based Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study (MoBa). The study aimed to identify risk factors that may inhibit smoking cessation and promote smoking during a woman’s second pregnancy.The findings offer new and additional insight into modifiable risk factors that may help facilitate more targeted smoking cessation interventions for women at the highest risk.

An RCT of a health education intervention provided by nurses to mothers of sick children

Brief health education intervention by nurses in a busy clinical setting produced short-term effects in several key areas: raising awareness about exposure to secondhand smoke, reducing cigarette consumption, initiating quit attempts, and ultimately reducing sick children’s exposure to secondhand smoke. However, these short-term effects were not sustained at the 12-month follow-up, resulting in the need for more intensive interventions. Nurses can play key roles in providing individual counselling and advocacy of smoke-free homes in Hong Kong.
