Tobacco cessation at the 5th Latin American and Caribbean Conference Tobacco or Health in Montevideo, Uruguay
The 5th Latin American and Caribbean Conference Tobacco or Health will take place on June 13-16, 2017 at the Radisson Hotel in Montevideo, Uruguay. This conference will bring together tobacco control researchers, specialists in treatment, and experts in policy change from the region and around the world to share and apply the latest evidence. There will be three tracks on Tobacco Dependency Treatment, Tobacco Control Policy, and Regional Experiences. Research findings will be presented throughout the conference and there will be Posters Sessions and awards for accomplishment.
For those interested in tobacco cessation there is a very significant program including two plenaries and eight concurrent sessions. The plenaries are “Guaranteeing access to tobacco cessation treatments” and “Electronic Cigarettes: A benefit or a dangerous distraction?” The sessions will address the implementation of FCTC Article 14, access to treatment, treatment in primary care, build health professionals capacity to treat, cessation in pregnancy, innovative interventions in cessation, pharmacology of tobacco dependency treatment, among others.
A highlight of the conference is the inaugural presentation by the President of Uruguay Dr. Tabaré Vázquez reflecting on his country’s commitment to tobacco control. International speakers in cessation include Dr. Martin Raw, International Center for Tobacco Cessation; Dr. Aruni Bhatnagar, American Heart Association; Dr. Stella Regina Martins, Associação Médica Brasileira; Dr. Cheryl Oncken, Cancer Prevention and Control, Univ. of Connecticut; and Dr. Elisardo Becoña Iglesias, University of Santiago de Compostela, Spain.
The conference is being organized by the InterAmerican Heart Foundation (IAHF), the Uruguayan Honorary Commission for Cardiovascular Health, and the Uruguayan Honorary Commission Against Cancer with support from the Pan American Health Organization, Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids, International Development Research Center (IDRC), American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco (SRNT), National Cancer Institute, among others.
