Elizabeth Dimba, PhD discusses tobacco cessation training for oral health care professionals

Elizabeth Dimba, PhD, senior lecturer at the University of Nairobi College of Health Sciences, took time during the 2016 Global Tobacco Dependence Treatment Summit to discuss her project, “Tobacco Cessation Through Use of Oral Health Care Providers as Agents in Kenya.”

In her work with dentists and late-stage oral cancer patients, Dr. Dimba identified a need for more effective training in the provision of tobacco cessation counseling and worked with a multidisciplinary team from the School of Dental Sciences to develop intensive three-day residential workshops. These trainings resulted in increased awareness of the 5A’s and effective methods of pharmacotherapy among oral health care professionals. Dr. Dimba also noted a reduction of perceived barriers in favor of more positive attitudes toward short interventions for tobacco use prevention and cessation counseling.
