International Pharmaceutical Federation shares guide to establishing tobacco-free communities

The International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) recently published a guide for pharmacists aiming to encourage tobacco-free communities. It includes tobacco dependence treatment methods such as patient education and advice, behavioral therapy, self-help materials and telephone counseling.

The document provides an overview of various tobacco cessation activities in which pharmacists are involved. The authors noted three areas where pharmacists can reduce the impact of tobacco:

  1. Health promotion and prevention
  2. Triage activities
  3. Pharmacist-led interventions, both pharmacological and non-pharmacological
